ORTHODONTIC DENTISTRY

Orthodontics, often called Dentofacial Orthopedics, is a special branch of dentistry that deals with straightening teeth and altering bone growth. The dentist uses specially fitted appliances – including bands, brackets, wires, headgear, elastics, and removable appliances – to put constant pressure on the teeth. This pressure gently and gradually guides the teeth into their proper positions. Well-aligned teeth require less care, place less strain on the surrounding gums and bone, and give you an Invisalign smile.

People have their teeth straightened for lots of reasons, but dental health is the most important. If your teeth and jaws don’t line up properly in a good biting position, tooth decay and gum disease can develop. Appearance is another reason for wearing braces. Many people get braces because they simply aren’t happy with the way their teeth look.

Orthodontic treatment doesn’t work overnight – in fact, there is usually a two to three-year period of active treatment, which is followed by another two or three years of “retention” treatment.

ORTHODONTIC APPLIANCES

Rapid Palatal Expanders are ideal for patients exhibiting an anterior open-bite, thumb/finger/tongue thrust habit and needing controlled (moderate to significant) palatal expansion. A palatal expander gently separates the bony structures in the roof of the mouth to widen the upper jaw.

An archwire forms a track to guide the movement of teeth. It is used for correcting many types of malocclusions and is exceptional in its ability to control severe vertical dimension discrepancies.

Retainers hold teeth in their new positions while the bones and gums adapt to the change. Hawley Retainers lead the way in better retention and flexibility. Mandibular and maxillary retainers can be designed with many functions.
